Private Shore Excursion to Siena and San Gimignano from Livorno Port
ENJOY THE ANCIENT ATMOSPHERE IN THE BEAUTIFUL MEDIEVAL CITIES OF SAN GIMIGNANO AND SIENA
Your driver will take you through classic sweet hills, surrounded by vineyards and silvery green olive groves, between farms and castles, farmhouses and cypress trees. Enjoy the breathtaking scenery and the spectacle of nature that changes colors every season like a living picture postcard!
Your first stop is at San Gimignano, a famous quiet medieval village. It has descended through time untouched well preserved. Situated among the sweet hills of olives grooves and vineyards (here we have the famous white wine Vernaccia di San Gimignano "made only here")
San Gimignano has served as an important relay point for pilgrims travelling to or from Rome on the Via Francigena. The patrician families who controlled the town built around 72 tower-house (some as high as 50 m) as symbols of their wealth and power. San Gimignano has retained its feudal atmosphere and appearance.
If you like ice-cream (gelato), you will find one of the best ice-cream shops that also won the world championships. Your driver will tell you where exactly it is situated.
Before lunch you leave San Gimignano to go to Siena. We recommend a quick lunch in the city street to optimize the time.
In Siena you'll notice an ancient atmosphere in the beautiful medieval city well preserved inside with narrow streets and squares, churches and towers. It's beautiful historic center has been inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. You'll feel as if you've stepped back in time.
Here you can taste local products (optional) like Pecorino cheese, the typical sliced salami of Cinta Senese, Chianti wines, extra virgin olive oil, pasta Toscana "Pici and Pappardelle", cream and wild boar and the typical sweets Ricciarelli, Panforte.
You will see the heart of Siena with the gothic cathedral (The Duomo is one of the most spectacular in Italy in full gothic style), but where there is the most important event is Piazza del Campo, dominated by Tower del Mangia witness to many events in history, but the most intriguing is the Palio, a horse race, one of the most important things in the life of a Siena native.
On the square, on 2 July and 16 August, there is a bareback horse race that was first recorded in 1283. On those days mayhem takes over. "Piazza del Campo" with it's strange shape of half orange, is covered with earth covering her typical red brick (to allow the horse race).
