Several cruise ships dock at the same time and it can get very busy. Near the pier is a small but modern cruise terminal. Most cruise passengers make an excursion to Ephesus.

Getting around in Izmir
It's easy and cheap to get around the city of Izmir. However the cruise is located about 2,5 kilometer from the city center with the Bell Tower and Bazaar. You can decide to make a nice walk, take the public bus or a taxi.
If you want to make a shore excursion on your own to Ephesus, you have several transportation options by bus, train or taxi. Just keep in mind the time and distance.

Izmir is mostly popular due to the shore excursions to the nearby Ephesus where you can visit the most important archeological site of Turkey, dating back to the 11th century BC. Izmir itself (Smyrna in earlier times) also dates back from that era, but not too much can be found of it as a result of the many plunderings and earthquake.
