Visit Bilbao during your cruise vacation
Bilbao is the capital of the Basque Country and is Spain’s tenth largest city. The city is located in north-central Spain. The city was founded by Diego López V de Haro and was a center of commerce and known for exporting iron extracted from the Biscayan quarries.
Originally, the town only had three streets that had walls around them. On the inside was a hermitage for Apostle Saint James. Four streets were added in the fifteenth century. This made up the original Seven Streets. In 1571, the walls were destroyed and the city was expanded.
The city’s largest attraction is the Guggenheim Museum which opened in 1998 and attracts people from around the world. It hosts some of the finest works of art from around the world. Bilbao also offers great shopping and dining.
Bilbao is easy to explore on foot. You will need to take a shuttle, taxi, or the metro to the center of the city from your ship in Getxo. However from the center, you can walk everywhere. Bilbao is one city that you want to make sure is on your cruise itinerary. Exploring Bilbao can take from a few hours to a whole day, depending on your interests.
