The word Almeria is derived from Arabic and means mirror of the sea. Almeria retained its Arabic name after it was recaptured by Spain. The city has a population of roughly 200,000. One of the top tourist attractions is the Natural Resort (Parque Natural).
The cities top attractions are the beaches of La Almadrava de Monteleva and Las Salinas. Another can’t miss attraction is the underground shelters that were built when the Germans reached Almeria during the Spanish Civil War. Other destinations that should be on your list are the Museo del Aceite de Oliva, Palace of the Marquees of Cabra, and the Palace of the Viscounts of the Castillo de Almansa.
At the top of the city’s mountain is the Alcazaba. It was built in 995 and offers outstanding views of the city. The cathedral offers an interesting blend of Renaissance and Gothic architecture.
Almeria is easy to explore on foot. The city center is near the cruise terminal and is only one kilometer by foot. In Almeria there is a lot to do, especially if you like nature. Make sure you leave enough time to see everything the area has to offer.
