What to do in Lisbon
Visit Lisbon during your cruise vacation
Lisbon is the capital of Portugal and is beautifully situated along the River Tagus, which flows into the Atlantic Ocean. The history of the city goes far back in time. Greeks, Romans and Arabs ruled successively over the city. From the 12th century the city was in the hands of the Crusaders. Early 16th century Portugal's Golden Age began after the discovery of the sea route to India by Vasco Da Gama. In 1755 the city was hit by a massive earthquake and the rebuilding of the city started soon after. Today you can still recognize the different influences from the rich past of Lisbon. It is a multicultural city with a vibrant street life. You can relax in the historic center and the Belém district with its many cafes and restaurants.
A thorough exploration of Lisbon will take a full day and still you won't be able to see it all. Most interesting sights are located in the historic city center and the Belem district. Both are located several kilometers from each other, but are very well connected by public transport.
