Visit Funchal city during your cruise vacation
Madeira is a sub-tropical island located in the Atlantic Ocean and an autonomous region of Portugal. Known as the Islands of eternal Spring or Pearl of the Atlantic, it has a beautiful mild climate throughout the entire year.
The island is world-famous for its wines, a lot of stores offer local selections. Also Funchal is very popular as a destination for New Year's Eve, a lot of cruise ships dock in Madeira on Dec 31.
Funchal is the capital and the largest city of Madeira island, situated in the south between Santa Cruz and Camara de Lobos cities.
Once you are in the city centre you can explore everything by foot. You can use public system in Madeira. One way ticket is 1,35 euro (at the bus driver you pay 1,90€ for a ride) and day ticket is approx. 5,80 euro per person. Public system is frequent and easy to understand. At the tourist office you can get a map with timetables for public system.
Cable car provides a nice trip up the hill. One way ticket 11 euro, round trip is 16 euro. It is also a great experience to take a Monte Toboggan (basket ride). It is one of Funchal's main tourist attraction.
In Funchal city you can find public free wifi spots (Praca do Municipio, Avenida Arriaga, Praca de Colombo, near the Cathedrale etc).
A thorough exploration of Funchal, Madeira will take a full day and still you won't be able to see it all. Most interesting sights are located in the historic city center and are very well connected by public transport.
