There are several location where crusie ships can dock. Mostly small cruise ships will dock less then 1 km walk from the city center of Funchal. Big cruise ships will dock at the southern pier of Funchal. It is about 1-2 km from the city center. It is always better to check with your cruise company if shuttle service will be provided. By foot it will take about 20-25 min uphill walk to the center of Funchal.
Taxi from the cruise port to the center of the city is 7,50 euro per cab/one way fixed price. Only use official taxis which are yellow with a blue stripe, they do have a meter. If you would like to go by taxi around Madeira price will be approx. 100 euro (up to 4 people).
There is also a good public system in Madeira. One way ticket is 1,35 euro (at the bus driver you pay 1,90€ for a ride) and day ticket is approx. 5,80 euro per person. Public system is frequent and easy to understand.
