What to do in Taormina
Visit Taormina during your cruise vacation
For many, Taormina is the most beautiful place in Sicily. The early settlement was founded by the Greeks from Syracuse. Later, the city experienced great prosperity under the Romans. In the 19th century, it became a tourist attraction.
Taormina is situated on a plateau in the hills overlooking the bay of Giardini Naxos. When the weather is clear, Mount Etna is visible. It is a small town with a charming and historic character. Corso Umberto with its many squares, shops, and restaurants, is centrally located. Most streets are traffic free and buses park just outside the city.
Several celebrities such as Goethe, Oscar Wild, Richard Strauss, and Marlene Dietrich were charmed by this wonderful place.
Taormina is not very big, but getting there is time consuming. Count on at least half a day. It is a lovely place for a stroll and to visit the landmarks. In summer, it can be extremely busy.
