Visit Pompeii during your cruise vacation

The dramatic events on August 24th of the year 79, immortalized the city of Pompei. The entire city was buried after an eruption of Mount Vesuvius and remained hidden under the rubble and lava for centuries. At the end of the 16th century, the first remains were discovered and since the 18th century, archaeological excavations have been going on.

Today, Pompei is perhaps the best preserved Roman city. It paints an accurate picture of the daily life of the Romans. Pompei is UNESCO World Heritage and attracts millions of visitors annually.

Besides ordinary houses, you will find a forum, amphitheater, baths, and temples. Pompei was a very prosperous city and the center of trade and industry. Infrastructure, roads, and water supplies were far ahead of their time.

Practical info

The archaeological site of Pompei is huge. A short visit takes at least 2 hours, but you can also spend half a day or more.

Especially in the summer, it can become tremendously hot
. A visit to Pompei can be combined with Herculaneum, Vesuvius or Sorrento.
