What to do in Lucca

Visit Lucca during your cruise vacation

Lucca, the birthplace of composer Giacomo Puccini, is one of the richest cities of northern Italy. The city walls are still intact and the historic character is well preserved.

In Roman times, Lucca was already an important trading town because it was located on the crossing of the great Roman roads. The chessboard pattern according to which the city was built, reflects the Roman influences. The city walls, on which you can walk, date from the 15th and 16th century. They served as protection against the attacks of Florence.

Today, the historic city is somewhat like an open air museum. It is a great place to hang out, especially if you love architecture. It is the many churches, piazzas and palazzos that make Lucca so special.
