Since pre-historic times La Spezia is a port town by its geographical and strategic location. It was later developed during Roman Times. Because of the strategic importance, the city was also besieged many times. Today you can still see remnants of the city walls and fortifications. During World War II, La Spezia was used by the Germans to construct the U-boats. It is a small, charming town with a pleasant Mediterranean atmosphere and some beautiful houses. Meanwhile, the city has become a very important international commercial port. It is also a large base of the Italian navy.
Most cruisepassengers in La Spezia opt for an excursion to the nearby Cinque Terre or one of the Tucan classics such as Pisa, Lucca or Florence.
La Spezia itself has not too much to offer but at least you should pay it a short visit. Count on 1 to 3 hours.
