What to do in Piraeus
Visit Piraeus during your cruise vacation
Throughout history Piraues has always been an important port in Greece. During the Middle Ages the port was known as Porte Leone, because of the large stone lion which guarded the entrance to the harbor.
Today it's the largest port in Europe with a lot of passengers on the busy ferry connections to the Greek islands and international ports. There are few highlights. Melina Merkouri sang about Piraeus and scored historic hit in the 60's with 'Ta Paidia tou Pirea'.
It seems the city never sleeps. From early in the morning there are crowds at the port and throughout the day it's a coming and going of passengers.
Piraeus is worth a visit, if it is not that Athens is nearby and gets all the attention. It's always nice to have a taste of the hustle and bustle in the port area, but don't expect too much from Piraeus itself. 1 to 2 hours are more than sufficient.
You can choose to first explore Athens and visit Piraeus on the way back. You can easily do this on your own or book an organized shore excursion.
