What to do in Olympia
Visit Olympia during your cruise vacation
Olympia is located in the hills about 40 kilometers from Katakolon. The site was only discovered in 1766. After the last Olympics in 393, it was completely swamped after earthquakes and floods. Today the Olympic flame starts from this site.
Once it was a sanctuary dedicated to Zeus, where the Olympic Games were held every four years. Even in times of war between the Greek city-states, the Olympic Peace was proclaimed, so that everyone could come to Olympia. Often disputes were settled during the Games. The oldest written sources date back from 776 BC.
In the beginning the Games lasted only one day and only running was on the program. Only later it grew into a multi-day event.
TIP: Go early in the morning to avoid the hottest part of the day. Moreover, the site already closes at 15h00. The museum stays open a little longer.
The top excursion from the cruise port of Katakolon is Olympia. Depending on how much time you want to spend, you can count on a half to almost a whole day.
