Kerkira is the capital of the island of Corfu, but the city itself is also often called Corfu, sometimes causing confusion. The origins of the city can be found in the 6th century BC. Venetians, Ottomans, Romans, Russians and the British ruled the city throughout history. Many colonial influences can be found in the various highlights.

The different neighborhoods have their own architecture that reflects the influence of the various rulers. It are mainly the Venetian forts which dominate the city. The historic center is a maze of little streets and squares, also inspired by the Venetians.

The historic town of Kerkira is rightly added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2007. It is worth visiting. Count on several hours.
