What to do in Athens

Visit Athens during your cruise vacation

Athens is the largest city of Greece. It's the capital where the economic, political and cultural center of the country is located. It's a modern metropolis with a rich and long history. Athens is considered the cradle of Western civilization and was one of the first democracies in the world.

Central in the city, on the 156 meter high Table Mountain, stands the symbol of Greece: the Acropolis, which also literally means 'highest point of the city'. In addition you can find several districts and squares each with their typical character. Plaka, Omonia, Syntagma and Monastiraki are the best known.

It's also here that in 1896 the first modern Olympic Games were held at the Panathinaikon stadium. The last Games in Athens date from 2004. Athens is also the perfect place to discover and taste Greek gastronomy. Olive oil and wine are part of the so called "Green Treasure" of Greece.

The nice thing about Athens is that almost all highlights are within walking distance of each other and that you can relax on one of the beautiful beaches after a busy morning.
