During a cruise along the Greek islands, Patmos is sometimes on the program. Patmos is located on the Dodecanese Islands. The island is 34 square kilometers and has a coastline of 63 kilometers. The island has a population of around 3,000 people.

The island is one of the best places to live with its beaches and tranquil lifestyle. The major tourist attractions are religious relics. St. John was exiled to the island in 95 AD. John had visions in a cave near Chora and wrote the Book of Revelation.

Landmarks and highlights in Patmos

Monastery of St. John
The monastery was built in the 11th century to honor St. John the Divine. He is credited with writing the Book of Revelation. The building features many courtyards and roof terraces.

Holy Cave of the Apocalypse
John the Evangelist moved to the island in 95 AD. He lived in this cave. There he heard the Apocalypse dictated by the voice of God through a cleft in the rock.

Walk around Chora
This is a small town with white buildings and colorful doorways and flowers. This is a great place to pick up some lunch and take pictures.

St. Nicholas Church
This church is one of the many beautiful chapels on the island. There are 400 churches on the island.

Getting around in Patmos

One can walk around Skala from the port. However walking to Chora is difficult. There is a only one way up, a walk along the steep and winding road can take about 1 hour, especially when it’s hot. The distance from Skala to Chora is about 4.5 kilometers. If you like to walk take the main street in front of the port. Just follow it to the top. About halfway up the hill you will see the Apocalypse Cave. On top in Chora is the Monastery. There is also a cheap alternative by public bus.

Shore excursions around Patmos

The town of Skala down at the port is a nice and tranquil place to stroll. However most cruise passengers go to Chora which is located atop a hill overlooking the island. The most important sights are the Monastery of St. Johan and the Holy Cave of the Apocalypse.
