Minoan Palace of Knossos
One place that you will want to visit is the ruins of the Minoan Palace of Knossos. This location is said to hold the original Labyrinth of the Minotaur and is over 3,700 years old.

Koules Fortress
This fortress was built to protect the harbor from outside invaders and was built in the 15th century. Koules means fortress in Turkish, but the Venetians named it Rocca al Mare. The exterior of the fortress has a plaque of the winged lion of St Mark.

25th August Street
This pedestrian street is home to a variety of neoclassical buildings. This street connects the harbor with Lion Square.

Lion Square
This is a great place to try out Bougatsa, a typical Greek breakfast pastry.

Morosini Fountain
The fountain is located in Lion Square and is a popular meeting place. It was commissioned by Francesco Morosini, in the 17th century, to commemorate the opening of an aqueduct.

Agora
The market is a great place to try out local foods. The street is filled with shops and stalls that have local products.

In Heraklion you dock next to the Venetian Harbour, just outside the Ancient City Walls. The historic center is approximately one kilometer away. If you want to go to Knossos better take a taxi or public bus.
